Civic Society Publications

In addition to making grants to aid the publication of books, booklets and pamphlets by outside bodies and individuals, the Society is committed to producing and publishing material on the history of the area, its buildings, organisations and people.

Currently the Society's output of written work is carried out by local historian Michael Bardell.

Braintree CageBraintree Cage was published in 2004 and places this important building in its social and historical setting. It describes how the need for local overnight cells developed rapidly in the mid 19th Century and also contains details of the Cage's provision and construction.

Braintree CageThe Road That Divides? Was published by Michael Bardell with grant aid from the Society (subsequently repaid) in 2007 and has already been re-printed. It examines harmony and discord between the linked towns of Braintree and Bocking not least in the subject of 17th Century plague burials.

Braintree CageCrittall Bus Shelters was published in 2011 with generous financial help from Crittall Windows Ltd. It followed restoration in 2010 of the last remaining shelter, at Bocking Cemetery, by Braintree District Council, a project that the Society supported both with technical help and finance.
